Role of Cold Chain and Logistics Sector in the Pharmaceutical Industry
The Global Pharmaceutical Market is huge. A recent report released by Statista revealed that the market is on an exponential growth and is projected to grow at 4.71% (2024-2029) resulting in a market volume of US$1454.00bn in 2029.
A proper cold chain system and solution helps to keep cross-contamination of food at bay. Now how is it done? Well, we will talk about each and everything possible in this blog. The pharmaceutical industry's dependency on cold chain logistics isn't new. Drugs are produced in one geography and are consumed somewhere else, hence efficient and secure transportation and storage of temperature-sensitive products are crucial for maintaining the integrity and efficacy of pharmaceuticals for a longer period.

Also, you would be surprised to know that every day tons of perishable medicines are carried and transparent from one place to another using advanced cold chain and logistics technology. Moreover, post-Covid-19, when the world faced a huge crisis for Biologics, raw materials, bulk pharmaceuticals and over-the-counter medicines - globally the demand to accelerate the cold chain and logistics industry rose to unprecedented heights.
Due to this, the global pharmaceutical cold chain market is projected to expand from USD 5.3 billion in 2023 to USD 9.6 billion by 2035, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.7% during the 2023-2035 forecast period.
We, via this blog, will explore 7 prime roles of cold Chain and the Logistics sector in the Pharmaceutical Industry.
1) Minimising the temperature - Medicines and other pharmaceutical drugs are highly temperature sensitive and require uninterrupted temperature throughout the journey. Moreover, dedicated monitoring of it is needed right from its manufacturing department to health care providers.
How do cold chain and logistics solutions minimize temperature?
The answer is using various methods;
1) Refrigeration units - An ideal temperature of 2°C to 8°C is to be always maintained.
2) Wider spaces - A cool room is dedicated to keeping medicines as fresh as possible. A cold room where bulk storage of medicines is possible is dedicated to this purpose.
3) Dedicated freezer -
A standard freezer that can maintain temperatures around -20°C.is facilitated by the cold chain and logistics industry.
Not only this, but for many biologics and vaccines temperatures around as low as -80°C, are crucial.
4) Insulated Packaging - Since the products that we are handling here are medicines and pharmaceutical drugs, the packaging segment in the cold chain and logistics industry should ensure Thermal Insulated Boxes, Gel Packs and Ice Packs, Phase Change Materials (PCMs), Dry Ice etc.
2) Quality maintenance- The cold chain and logistics industry in the pharmaceutical sector is responsible for maintaining the quality of the medicines that are being kept, stored and transported.
Steps that are ensured amidst this are as follows;
1) Temperature Control - Proper temperature regulation prevents degradation and spoilage of sensitive pharmaceuticals, such as vaccines and biologics, ensuring they remain effective and safe for patient use. Life-saving drugs have certain degradable properties that are responsible for further chemical reactions when they come in contact with the air or high temperature.
2) Temperature Monitoring - Temperature sensors are a crucial component of any monitoring system especially when the entire pharmaceutical industry is involved in this. Probe thermometers, wireless sensors and data loggers are examples of the various shapes and sizes available. The goal of these sensors is to carefully monitor and record temperature measurements at various points throughout the cold chain. The freezing temperature should be at or below 0 degrees Celsius.
3) Infrastructure and Equipment - The World Health Organization (WHO) has made it mandatory for all the equipment used in the cold chain and logistics industry that are handling medicines and drugs to comply with cold boxes, vaccine carriers and insulated boxes. Temperature sensors are a crucial component of any monitoring system especially when the entire pharmaceutical industry is involved in this. Probe thermometers, wireless sensors and data loggers are examples of the various shapes and sizes available. The goal of these sensors is to carefully monitor and record temperature measurements at various points throughout the cold chain.
3) Overcoming product spoilage - The cold chain and logistics solutions in the pharmaceutical industry comprise controlled freeze and thaw processes which are carefully managed steps to freeze the products (the medicine time and again) to maintain their quality, efficacy, and safety.
These are mainly done by employing two steps;
Controlled Freezing - Gradual cooling is done to maintain the exact composition of the medicine and shape. Thereafter a consistent temperature is opted to prevent fluctuations.
Controlled Thawing - After the medicines are dispatched, slow warming is done to ensure the even release of the product. Later when this is done, constant monitoring is done to check if there is any requirement left.
If you want to showcase your product in the cold chain and logistics sector, you must first aim to do that in the Middle East, that too in UAE - a country already ahead in sustainability, and technology and is looking to strengthen its pharmaceutical industry.
